Join David Hewitt and Frank Sherlock, two lifelong friends, as they discuss the cultural landscape of The Woodlands. A Scientist and an Artist respectively, their backgrounds have informed their unique perspectives on The Woodland’s cultural and natural history. After their talk, Hewitt and Sherlock will lead the group on a tour of the grounds.

Light refreshments will be served.
Tour will be rain or shine, so come prepared in case of rain.

David Hewitt has been working with plants, animals, soils and water for more than twenty years, starting when he began working on small farms in upstate New York.  Currently, he serves in a variety of roles at local institutions, including the Wagner Free Institute of Science; he is also a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania and a research associate in the Department of Botany at the Academy of Natural Sciences.  He served as an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow in Washington, DC, working in agricultural policy. His current research focuses on urban parkland ecology and management, and related public health issues.  He has also worked on botanical surveys, mycological studies, and the history of botany.  David has B.A. in biology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. from the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University.

Frank Sherlock grew up in Southwest Philadelphia and attended Temple University. Sherlock was the 2014-15 Poet Laureate of Philadelphia, and a 2013 Pew Fellow in the Arts for Literature. "I approach poetry as a cartographer," said Sherlock. "...mapping and remapping your surroundings according to your personal memory and associations and histories that you've heard." His project as Poet Laureate was called "Write Your Block," giving Philadelphians the opportunity to explore their neighborhoods via poetry.
