Please join Ars Nova Workshop, The Woodlands, and the Philadelphia birdwatching community for a socially-distanced performance and bird watching event at The Woodlands celebrating the 100th birthday of legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker. Parker is one of the great innovators of American music, bringing the world of jazz out of danceable swing and into the harmonically and rhythmically complex music we celebrate. Parker’s nickname was “Yardbird,” or more well-known, simply “Bird.” On the 100th anniversary of Charlie Parker’s birth – August 29, 2020 – it is impossible to imagine the evolution of jazz and modern music in general without the indelible influence of one of the most important Black American figures in history. With the talents of Pew Fellow and West Philadelphian Bobby Zankel and fellow musical greats Sumi Tonooka, Richard Hil, andl Nazir Ebo, Ars Nova will be presenting “Bird Calls” as an early-morning concert on Friday, August 28, and Saturday, August 29.

Lead support is provided by the William Penn Foundation.
