The Woodlands, The First of its Kind: Oval Rooms, Porticoes, Painted Furniture, and Gardens in Federal America

Following the American Revolution, well-to do Americans turned back to England and Europe for architectural inspiration. William Hamilton was among the first to redesign his Georgian mansion and convert it into an American neoclassical palace, replete with oval rooms and a grand portico facing the Schuylkill River. While Hamilton was the first to implement this new fashion in architecture following his return from England. Within the following decades other elegant mansions were built in the new republic, some with impressive landscaping, working farms, and interior furnishings that also reflected English and European styles.

This talk by Wendy Cooper, Curator Emerita of Furniture at the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library will begin at 1:00pm in the Hamilton Mansion.

Guided tour of the Hamilton Mansion and Cemetery will be available at 11:00am.
